Low-key celebrations for Vesak

The government has decided to inform all incumbents of Buddhist temples countrywide not to organise large-scale Vesak celebrations because of the security situation. To ensure the security at Buddhist temples countrywide, steps are now being taken with the help of the three Armed Forces and the Police, he said.

There are over 750 foreign Buddhist monks staying in Sri Lanka and their names will be given to the Security Forces for their personal safety, the Minister said.

Vesak pandals (thoranas) and Vesak decorations and celebrations have to be organised within temple premises this year.

“I have asked the Security Forces to investigate more than 1,000 Muslims who have been registered in state records under Sinhala names,” the Minister said.

“The Police and the Armed Forces have recovered large stocks of yellow robes and begging bowls in the possession of the suspects arrested after the Easter terror attacks. That is why I ask Buddhists countrywide to be vigilant during this Vesak festive season,” he said.
