CID to grill Madhush on VIP assassination plot

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s court that they will record a statement from notorious underworld criminal Makandure Madhush regarding the VIP assassination plot.

The Criminal Investigations Department made this remark when the magisterial inquiry into the case filed against former Deputy Inspector General of Terrorist Investigations Division was taken up before the Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake.

Nalaka de Silva was further remanded till May 21 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake. He has been allegedly accused of plotting to assassinate the President, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and SP Prasanna Alwis.

Attorney Ajith Pathirana appearing on behalf of DIG Nalaka Silva stated that Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris mentioned in his written submission that there is no evidence other than Namal Kumara’s evidence regarding the plotting to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Attorney Ajith Prasanna appearing on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Movement Director Namal Kumara pleaded to issue an order directing the National Authority of the Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses to provide security for his client under the protection of Victim of Crimes and Witnesses Act. Counsel Prasanna further informed that his client had received death threats from several politicians, police officials and several underworld criminals. After considering the request made by counsel Prasanna, the Magistrate ordered the CID to submit a report regarding this incident and submit a report in Court on May 14. The Magistrate also ordered the CID to record a statement from Namal Kumara regarding this matter.

Responding to the submission made by Counsel Ajith Prasanna, the CID informed the Magistrate that the Criminal Investigations Department Director had sent a letter on April 12 directing the Deputy Inspector General of the Sabaragamuwa Province to take action to provide security for Namal Kumara.

The Magistrate ordered the CID that court be informed if they gathered any information relating to this case following the questioning of notorious underworld criminal Makandure Madhush. The Magistrate said he would determine whether the charges against the suspects should be filed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act or not.The Magistrate fixed order for May 21.
