Five hundred and thirteen suspects arrested

The police, the Special Task Force (STF), and the army arrested 513 suspects with possible links to the Islamic extremists responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks in search operations conducted during the past two weeks.

Among the suspects were 15 females. Moreover, several weapons, including swords, knives, and firearms were found in their possession. The number of knives and swords seized alone stood at 13,000.

According to Kurunegala DIG Wasantha Kithsiri Jayalath, 261 suspects have been arrested from Kurunegala, while around 121 suspects have been apprehended in Nikaweratiya. About 131 suspects have been arrested from Kuliyapitiya as well, he added.

Furthermore, the army and the police also apprehended two suspects manufacturing fake licence plates in Madurankulya. Puttalam Army Camp Commanding Officer Dhammika Dissanayake said the resemblance of the plates was uncanny to those issued by the Motor Traffic Department.

Mundel Police Officer-in-Charge IP Saman Ekanayake said the suspects had been running the joint in the guise of a vehicle sticker shop. They were to be produced at the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Meanwhile, police found a sniper rifle hidden in a cupboard at a house near the Kurunegala Maliyadewa College, last Sunday. In addition, two swords and knives were also seized from that same house. The suspect in possession of the rifle has been identified as a businessman in the area. Investigations are continuing.
