Over Rs. 15 bn to upgrade hospitals

Funding from China, Europe, Australia

The Chinese government has granted a micro interest loan of Rs. 13 billion to Sri Lanka to upgrade 13 hospitals, while Germany, Austria, France and the Netherlands have granted Rs. 37,600 million to develop four hospitals, a Health Ministry spokesman said yesterday.

The hospitals in Meerigama, Aluthgama, Rikillagaskada, Mahiyanganaya, Padaviya, Kalawana, Walamulla, Medirigiriya, Kalpitiya, Pottuvil, Samanthurai, Dharga Town and Eravur will be upgraded by next year with the Chinese micro interest loan, while the grants from Germany Austria, France, and the Netherlands will be used to develop the De Soyza Hospital for Women, and the Batticaloa and Embilipitiya Hospitals. Germany has also granted Rs. 20 billion to the Ministry for the reconstruction of Panadura Hospital, he said.

French financial aid worth Rs. 14 billion will be spent on construction of a new ‘Spital complex’, which will be affiliated to the Dambulla Hospital for which the Rangiri Dambulla Temple has allocated five acres of land.

Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank has reportedly agreed to provide Rs. 60 million, out of which Rs 12.5 million is a grant, to upgrade the primary health service sector in the Central, North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces.

The primary health service development programme will continue until November 2023.
