War on drugs will continue - President

President Maithripala Sirisena while assuring defeat for terrorism in the country stressed the continuation of the National Drug Prevention Programme despite challenges against it.

He said the international terrorism, drug smuggling, weapon smuggling networks and the underworld are one single unit and said all these challenges against the country will be defeated.

The President stated this during a discussion on the ‘Programme to Rehabilitate Drug Addicts’ held at the President’s Office yesterday.

According to the President, the national programme on drug prevention could have achieved many outputs if not for the April 21 tragedy.

“We faced this terrorist attacks while we were conducting a huge programme against the drugs menace,” he added.

The President instructed officials to implement the programme to rehabilitate drug addicts in a proper manner through a practical methodology.

He also pointed out that juvenile delinquents should not be housed together with hardcore criminals as it can cause them to become criminals in the future.

The President was also of the view that juvenile delinquents should be rehabilitated separately considering their age, nature of offence and the rehabilitation period.

Ven. Kuppiyawatte Bodhananda thera, Minister Thalatha Athukorala and Prisons Department officials participated at this discussion.
