Over 15,000 dengue cases in four months

A total of 15,407 dengue cases and 15 deaths were reported across the country for the first four months of this year, Epidemiology Unit sources said.

The highest number of dengue cases (3,405) was reported in the Colombo district, while the second-highest number (2,007) was reported in the Gampaha district. The third-highest number of dengue cases (1,783) was reported in the Jaffna district.

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) reported 664 dengue cases during the same period. The other parts of the Colombo district recorded 2,741 dengue cases. The number of dengue cases reported in the Western Province is 6,331. A total of 5,532 dengue cases was reported in the country in January while 3,653 dengue patients were reported in February. The number of dengue patients reported in March is 3,690. Only 2,343 dengue cases were reported in April, epidemiologists said.

Meanwhile, medical consultants advise pregnant mothers to seek admission to hospital on the first day of fever and the public should seek medical treatment for any type of fever without any delay and without resorting to home remedies. All fever patients need rest and should not attend work or school.

All fever patients should take Paracetamol only. All the other medications, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen cause dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which can be fatal, they said.
