Four held for illegal fishing

The navy apprehended four persons engaged in illegal fishing in the Puttalam lagoon on April 27.

Naval personnel of the North-western Naval Command arrested the suspects for fishing without valid passes and for using illegal fishing nets.

Two boats, two outboard motors, a 600-metre long fishing net, and 64kg of illegally-caught fish were seized during the raid.

The suspects are of the ages 17, 31, 53, and 54. They are residents of Kalpitiya. The suspects and their fishing gear were handed over to the Puttalam Fisheries Inspector for further investigations.
