Attacks used as presidential campaign launching pad - Deputy Minister Bandara

Namal Kumara’s ‘conspiracy theories’ in tandem with political campaigns

UNP MP Nalin Bandara speaking at a press briefing at Temple Trees said he would not have been surprised if Namal Kumara, the whistle blower of the assassination attempt on high ranking government officials was given a seat at the Security Council meetings.“It was the fallacy of Namal Kumara’s threats which plunged the country into a coup that lasted 52 days,” Deputy Minister Bandara said. “At the time he was the main source of intelligence information which was wholeheartedly endorsed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. We ask now, what of the investigation into those matters, what did it yield?

He added that it was clear Namal Kumara’s crusade was in tandem with the political campaigns of many presidential aspirants. “If the attention that had been given to his claims had been devoted to matters of national security, much of this could have been avoided,” Minister Bandara said.

Speaking at the press briefing he called on the President to hand over the Defence ministerial portfolio to MP Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka. “We are humbled that Minister Arjuna Ranatunga went as far as offering his post to the Field Marshal to take over this Ministry,” he said. “However despite our repeated requests, this is yet to be heeded to.”

He called on politicians to refrain from blaming one another for the terror attacks, adding that although the Prime Minister had not been privy to the Security Council meetings, he took collective responsibility on the part of the government.

UNP MP Thushara Indunil pointing to evidences related to the setting up of university which was proposed by MP Hizbullah and approved by the former government said that the previous regime was aware of the extremist group and their activities.

“The murder of the two police officers in Vavunathivu happened under the watch of the de-facto 52 day government,” he said. “Weapons were stolen and investigations were launched. We ask of what the outcome was from these investigations, since it has come to light that this extremist group had been behind the attack,” he said.
