Eight ministers, MPs warned of attacks

Eight ministers and MPs have been warned of Islamic extremist suicide bomber attacks, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday.

Senaratne confirmed that he is one among the targeted.Minister Senaratne said that his security has been informed of the matter recently and was warned not to leave his residence last Sunday and Monday.

“I am not the kind of person to disregard when my security warns me of terrorist attacks. That is how I have survived all this time. When they tell me to stay at home, I stay at home. I don’t argue with them. I was requested to confine myself to my residence, yesterday and the day before and I did exactly what I was told to do,” Minister Senaratne pointed out.

“I am not afraid of any terrorist attack and I shall not stop my fight against terrorism. I am positioned somewhere top in the list and I am ready to face any attack.” Minister Senaratne also said.

Minister Senaratne also denied the allegation that his supporters are disrupting the security forces in carrying out search operations in Dharga town. Senaratne said that if someone can prove, with evidence, that he has contacted any police station demanding such, he would step down from his post immediately.

Minister Senaratne made these observations at a press briefing held at Temple Trees yesterday evening.

Minister Senaratne revealed that an Islamic extremist has attempted to purchase a house which is situated near his residence. The owner of the house, also a Muslim, had immediately warned of this to the Minister. The minister has then requested the police and the CID to carry out an investigation on the matter. Several were taken into custody following the investigations, Minister Senaratne said.

“Some of those who were arrested were from Kattankudy and Moneragala. They have said that they were here to conduct sermons. We would not want any outsiders to conduct religious activities here when we have enough mosques and enough Moulavis to conduct them. So I instructed to arrest all such people who have any connection to Islamic fundamentalism. I have no links to terrorists in anyways.” Senaratne said.
