Pujith Jayasundara’s reluctance to resign as IGP over the failure of the police to protect civilians from the recent attacks is indicative of a valid reason, Development Strategies and International TradeDeputy Minister Nalin Bandara said. Bandara said there could have been a valid reason why appropriate action may not have been taken by the now deposed IGP, adding that the time was now for the IGP to speak up.

“The President conveyed to us that the IGP would resign. An acting Inspector General has been appointed in his place and there are discussions over the manner in which he had been served a letter for compulsory leave,” Bandara said. “His reluctance to resign indicates that he has valid reasons not to step down, over these attacks.”

Bandara said the Inspector General of Police should speak up about what had transpired in those Security Council meetings and the discussions over the plausible attacks on Easter, which he and others are believed to have been given ample warnings of.
