Fonseka’s appointment: Everything depends on the President - Minister Jayawickrama Perera

The UNP-led United National Front yesterday forwarded a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena requesting him to appoint former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order, political sources said.

The letter was reportedly handed over to the President after the Cabinet meeting.

Buddhasasana and Wayamba Development Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said most of the UNP members, including some ministers signed that letter urging the President to appoint Sarath Fonseka as Law and Order Minister.

“Now it is up to the President to decide on it,” said Minister Perera.

According to media reports the letter bears a total of 44 signatures by the UNF members. As pointed out by them Sarath Fonseka is the most experienced and knowledgeable MP in current Parliament in matters of security.

They have proposed to the President to give Fonseka the Law and Order Ministry considering the country’s current security situation.

Meanwhile, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga had expressed his willingness to step down from his portfolio should there be any issue concerning the composition of the ministers, to pave the way for Fonseka to have a ministry.

Asked Minister Jayawickrama Perera about the chances of Minister Ranatunga vacating his portfolio for Sarath Fonseka, he said, “Everything depends on the President’s decision.
