NEC to implement extensive plan to revitalize economy

The National Economic Council (NEC) will implement an extensive, solid plan to revitalize the country’s economy which was affected by the Easter Sunday terror attack.

President Maithripala Sirisena has said that a special mechanism will be designed to provide solutions to issues faced by the manufacturing sector, large-scale and medium-scale industries and export sector due to the Easter Sunday terror attack.

President Sirisena made these observations when the National Economic Council met yesterday under his chairmanship. The NEC met yesterday in order to discuss about the immediate solutions and concessionaires that should be provided to the business and manufacturing sectors in the country, President Media Division said in a statement.

According to the statement, the officers representing the Chamber of Commerce, Board of Investment, Export Development Board, Government Banks and representatives of construction sector, garment industry, export sector along with all ministry secretaries responsible for economic development of the country participated in the NEC meeting.

President Sirisena stated that he will expand the Cabinet Sub Committee which was appointed to look into the Tourism Development Sector and other industries which were affected by the recent terror attack,the statement added.

“The NEC meeting has revealed that the impact of the terror attack is high on ordinary people where as foreign investments were less affected,” the statement said.

President Sirisena has also pointed out that all possible measures will be taken against terrorism despite whatever resistance against the process.

Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, John Amaratunga, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Arjuna Ranatunga, Ravi Karunanayake, Eran Wickremeratne, Harsha de Silva, and Secretary to the President U.R. Seneviratne, Professor Lalith Samarakoon, Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy also participated in the meeting.
