Mahindananda’s fraud case postponed for August 10

A corruption case filed against former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage for allegedly committing a Rs. 53.1 million fraud while importing sports equipment during last the Presidential Election, was yesterday postponed for August 10 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

When the case was taken up in court, Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption’s Deputy Director General (Legal) Ganga Heiyanthuduwa appearing on behalf of the prosecution informed the court that they had sought the Chief Justice’s approval to transfer this case to the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar. Approval had not been received yet.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption had filed a corruption case in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court against former Sports Minister, Joint Opposition MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, and another official at the Sports Ministry, over an allegation of fraud of Rs. 53.1 million said to have taken place when importing sports equipment for sports clubs.

The Chief Magistrate ordered the prosecution to report on the progress of the matter on August 10.
