FR filed over Easter bomb blasts

A Fundamental Rights petition was yesterday filed in the Supreme Court seeking an order directing the Attorney General to institute criminal action against the country’s senior political, civil and security officials for their alleged negligence to prevent the serial blasts that occurred on Easter Sunday.

Public litigation activist Nagananda Kodituwakku who was suspended from practising as a lawyer for three years by the Supreme Court, filed this petition naming 10 such top officials of the country as respondents.

The petitioner alleged that the respondents’ negligence to avert the bomb attacks had caused civilian causalities and property damage despite regular warning by intelligence agencies including India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

The petitioner further alleged that petitioner’s Fundamental Rights guaranteed under Article 12 (1) of the Constitution which reads, “All persons are equal before the law and are entitled to the equal protection of the law,” were violated.

The petitioner further sought an order directing the respondents to pay compensation on behalf of the people who died and were injured in the bomb blasts.
