Bomb gear, suicide kit, seven suspects arrested in Ampara

Police and Armed Forces had recovered a set of clothing similar to the ones worn by the suicide bombers, the screen suspected to be the one seen in the video, over 150 gelignite sticks, over 100,000 metal balls, a van, a drone camera and a laptop and a large stock of explosives, from a house in Sammanthurai, Ampara yesterday evening. Seven men were arrested along with the explosives and other items, police said.

Personnel from Ampara Police Station, the Special Task Force and the Sri Lanka Army personnel found the explosives after searching the house located in Sennal Gramam in Sammanthurai. The search was carried out based on information provided by National Intelligence officers, police said.

A gun battle had reportedly erupted between security personnel and an unidentified group in Saindamaruthu in Kalmunai during a cordon and search operation conducted by the STF the Army, police said. Explosions had been reported during the operation.Based on information received the Police, Army and Special Task Force had launched a joint operation in the Samanthurai area in Kalmunai, where they had found several suspicious items, said Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

The troops had cordoned off the area and were conducting a search operation.A curfew was imposed in the Kalmunai, Sammanthurai and Chavalakade police areas from around 9.30 pm yesterday.
