CID grills singer Amal Perera, five others

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) grilled singer Amal Perera and five other suspects for hours after they were being deported from Dubai yesterday.

The CID took them into the custody on their arrival at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport last morning.

Amal Perera and other suspects, who were arrested by the Dubai police with the underworld kingpin Makandure Madush at a hotel party in Dubai last February, had been released on Monday.

During interrogation, Perera had confessed that he met Madush during a concert in Dubai last November. But this statement is contrary to the statement given to the CID by actor Ryan Van Rooyen that Amal Perera knew Makandure Madush for a long time. The actor had confessed that Madush met Perera at the hotel where he was staying last November too and he was introduced to Madush by Amal there.

An officer from the CID told Daily News that considering this contradiction, they are to interrogate Amal Perera thoroughly on his connection to Makandure Madush.

The officer said the other suspects deported with Amal Perera include Mohammad Fawz Mohammad Azmi alias Ullampanam Azmi, Shelton De Silva of Kamburupitiya, Amila Prasanga of Mirissa, Deepal Chaminda of Matara and Dhammika Ruwan Ranawaka of Denipitiya, Weligama. Suspect Mohammad Azmi alias Ullampanam Azmi has been identified as the murderer of the spouse of the Madush’s underworld accomplice Kanjipani Imran. She had been shot to death at Maligawatte on an order given by Imran.

The CID yesterday knew that Kanjipani Imran had taken Azmi to Dubai a week after the murder.
