N. Krushnathas (70) who lives opposite Zion Church, Baticaloa, said he was watering his garden at 9.15 am yesterday, when he heard a loud explosion from the direction of the church. He and other family members then ran towards the church.

“We saw the church on fire and smoke rising. We moved the motorcycles on the roadway to clear the area. There was loud crying and wailing and the Fire Department was assisting in transporting the dead and the injured to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.”

Joseph Moraes Anton (51) who also lives close to the church, said he heard a loud explosion when he was inside his house, yesterday morning.

“When I looked out, through the boundary wall, I saw the church in flames. At first, I thought that it was the library was on fire. Later, I heard crying and wailing.”

“I thought a gas cylinder or generator had burst. Then I saw pieces of flesh on the roofs. It is only then that I realised that some major explosion had taken place. I joined the others in helping to evacuate the dead and the injured with the help of the Forces, the Police and the Fire Department.”
