Suspect who attacked Thomian captain remanded

Galle Additional Magistrate Pavvitra Sanjeevani Pathirana yesterday remanded a suspect until April 30 for allegedly assaulting the captain of the U19 cricket squad of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia at Galle International Cricket Stadium following their victory over Richmond College, Galle in the final of the All Island U 19 School Cricket tournament.

The suspect is an old boy aged 41 of Richmond College, Galle.

In prosecution, the Galle police told the court that as S. Thomas’ College registered a win by 11 runs at the above final match about 150 people had rushed to the middle of the ground and started assaulting the players of the winning team including the captain of S. Thomas’.

The captain of the team had been attacked by the mob using flag poles, the police further told the court.

Following the complaint made by S. Thomas’ captain, the police had initiated investigations into the incident and arrested the suspect.

The police also submitted to the magistrate that there were nearly 20 persons to be arrested in connection with the incident.
