Power Cuts due to incomplete Umay Oya Project -Ravi

says he will add 120 Mw to national grid by mid 2020

Recent power outages and scheduled power cuts experienced across the country in extremes of weather, which led to chaos, loss of revenue and financial damages were mainly due to not implementing 120- Megawatt Uma Oya project on time, Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake said during a tour of inspection to the project site.  

The Uma Oya Multi-purposes Development Project was slated for completion in June, 2018.  Previous to Minister Karunanayaka’s visit to the site President Maithripala Sirisena on February 22 after inspecting the site’s underground power plant under construction In Randeniya , directed relevant authorities to speed up its completion and provide its benefits to the people by August.  

Minister Karunanayaka said he plans to complete the Uma Oya Hydropower project by mid 2020.

The project will feed 120 Megawatts of electricity to the national grid.

Karunanayakja also admitted delays in the construction of power plants have given vent to occurrences of recent power outages.

The minister pointed out that there have been numerous obstacles that contributed to those delays.

“But my objective is to remove them and to hasten the construction of power plants,” he added.
