‘Tamil community contributes greatly to economy’

Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu said that Sri Lanka's Tamil community renders a yeomen service to its economy. He also said that India extends its fullest support towards all development projects in the country.

The high commissioner was addressing a gathering at a cornerstone ceremony for a kovil in Mulatiyana, Matara.

A state-of-the-art auditorium named after Rabindranath Tagore was also set up at the Ruhuna University, recently, he said. India has also provided relief to Sri Lanka during times of disaster and has also helped set up housing schemes in various regions of the country, he added.

High Commissioner Sandhu said that Sri Lanka's tea was a great contributor to its economy.

Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, who also was present at the event, said that every minister and state minister will be granted Rs.3 billion each for development activities in their respective locations in order to develop all regions in the country.

Hill Country Minister Palani Digambaran said that his parents had migrated to Sri Lanka from India and worked in tea estates and as such, he was aware of the hardships faced by estate workers.

The previous regime did not provide even an inch of land to estate workers, but the present government has seen to it, he added.
