‘Wade’ vendor arrested over Thera’s murder

A ‘Wade’ vendor has been arrested by the Pindeniya Police in connection with the alleged murder of Pothukoladeniya Sri Vivekarama Viharadhipati Ven.Rotumbe Chandrananda Thera (87).

The 62-year old suspect, a resident of Anguruwella had allegedly committed the murder because the Bhikkhu had refused to lend him Rs.10,000 on interest, Police investigations revealed.

Police said the suspect had been staying at his daughter’s house at Arandana to engage in his ‘wade’ business.

He had maintained a close friendship with the Bhikkhu over a period of time and received money from the Bhikkhu on several past occasions.

Investigations revealed that on April 5 morning, the day of the incident, the Bhikkhu had given several items including an Atapirikara to be sold. After handing over the money realised from the sale at around 7 pm that day, the suspect had again asked the Bhikkhu for some money on interest.

The Bhikkhu in turn had advised the suspect to pay up and settle the earlier dues before asking for money again. This had angered the suspect and he had taken a broken window frame and attacked the Bhikkhu twice on the head and escaped. The club used in the murder has also been taken into Police custody.
