CID officer granted bail in bribery case

A Sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who was arrested by the Bribery Commission for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 80,000 from a businessman in Kelaniya, was granted bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday.

The suspect was released on a cash bail of Rs. 25,000 and two sureties of Rs.400,000 each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban on the suspect and ordered him to hand over his passport to the court.

The CID officer had allegedly solicited a bribe of Rs. 100,000 from the businessman, promising him not to file a court case related to a cheque fraud. The Sergeant was arrested while accepting the alleged bribe from the businessman.

The Bribery Commission received a complaint with regard to the incident a few days ago and initiated an investigation which led to the arrest. Bribery officers were also investigating whether other police officers were involved in the incident.

The Magistrate ordered the Bribery Commission to expedite the investigation and fixed further inquiries for August 27.
