Despite coconut price reduction:

Coconut oil prices remain unchanged

Although the prices of coconuts have gone down drastically, the price of coconut oil has not shown any reduction in the market. Both common consumers and sweetmeat manufacturers are inconvenienced during this festive season.

These days, a coconut is priced at Rs.40 to 50, but a bottle of coconut oil is priced at Rs. 270 to 320 in the market. Last year, a coconut was priced at Rs.80 to 100 and those days, too, a bottle of coconut oil was priced at Rs.270 to Rs. 300.

However, several recent scientific experiments have confirmed that most of coconut oil varieties that are available at the open market are mixed with low-quality imported varieties of vegetable oil and hence, common consumers have been exploited by traders.

The relevant government authorities have failed to provide solutions to this issue as many complaints have been made to the concerned Ministers of Trade and Consumer Affairs by consumers’ protection associations in the country, Senior Kurunegala District Divisional Secretary W.E. Jayathilake said. He was speaking at a meeting of PHIs in the Kurunegala District on the raids to be conducted during this festive season to nab errant traders. The meeting was held at Bingiriya, yesterday.

About 567 PHIs have been deployed to inspect hotels, canteens, groceries, and eateries in the Kurunegala and Putalam districts, he added.
