Encroachment of lands near tanks go unabated in Anuradhapura

The encroachment of lands near tanks and irrigation canals for housing, cultivation, and business purposes in the Anuradhapura district is on the rise again.

The issue is being taken up for discussion at length at Anuradhapura District Agriculture Committee meetings for the past 10 years and no comprehensive action has so far been taken by the main stakeholders, such as irrigation and agrarian development departments and divisional secretariats, to stop the encroaching of reservations.

It was said that several tourist hotels had been set up near reservoirs such as the Nuwara and Tissa tanks.

It was also said that the owners of those establishments had also been given lad deeds. Furthermore, it was alleged that sewerage systems had been opened to the tanks as well. Residents said that the water in those tanks was being polluted, aside from their levels dwindling.

Although it has been alleged that there were about 200 encroachers in the land area near the Nuwara Wewa, only three cases had been filed regarding the matter in the recent past. Survey reports were also pending due to 10 more unauthorised constructions.

It was also learnt that there had been around 60 encroachment cases in the land surrounding the Mahakandarawa reservoir in Rajangane, where 43 farmers had used the lands for cultivation purposes.

There are 22 unauthorised constructions that have emerged in the land near the Nachchaduwa tank. In addition, according to divisional irrigation engineers, around 100 unauthorised constructions had been set up on the riverbanks from the Nachchaduwa tank to the Malwathu Oya. The irrigation engineers said that a majority of the boundaries near these tanks had not been marked.
