India and Sri Lanka agreed to work according to a new policy of Co-operation in Combating illicit drug and human trafficking.

This was discussed when visiting Indian Defence secretary Sanjay Mitra called on President Maithripala Sirisena at his official residence yesterday morning (April 8).

“During the discussions, attention was made towards working with wide understanding and agreement within the Indo-Sri Lanka Co-operation activities for regional peace and combating illegal drugs and human trafficking,” a press release by the Presidents Media unit said.

The release said the President also thanked India for the training opportunities afforded to Sri Lankan Security Forces and requested the Indian Defence Secretary to widen and further improve such training opportunities.

The discussions also centred round further strengthening defence co-operation between the two countries and exchange of views in this regard.

It was also agreed that the Defence Secretaries of the two countries should hold discussions towards the implementation of the agreements reached.

Secretary to the President Udaya R.Seneviratne, Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu were also associated in the discussions.
