A suspect, found guilty of illegally caging a pair of parrots in his house, was imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000 by acting Matara Magistrate Upali Ranasinhe.
According to the Fauna and Flora Act, parrots are protected birds, wildlife officials said.
The accused is a resident of Walgama in Matara. He was taken into custody on a tip-off.
A team of wildlife officials attached to the Mirisse Wildlife Office made this arrest.
