Airport Police, Customs seize foreign cigarettes from two passengers

Katunayake Airport Police yesterday arrested a passenger who attempted to smuggle 11,660 foreign cigarettes valued over Rs.583,000.

According to Police sources, the suspect arrived from Dubai on a UL flight at around 5. a.m. yesterday morning and he is a resident of Pottuvil.

The haul of illegal cigarettes was stored in a box in his hang luggage. The suspect was to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate yesterday evening.Police investigations are continuing under the supervision of OIC Chief Inspector Jayanath Wanasinghe.

Meanwhile, Customs sleuths on Saturday night arrested a 20-year-old Sri Lankan passenger at the Green Channel of Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake for attempting to smuggle in 153 cartons containing 30,600 foreign cigarettes valued at Rs.1,836,000.

The suspect, a resident of Ragama arrived from Dubai on Flight Number FZ 547.The detection was made by Customs Superintendent G.M.B. Gajanayake and Assistant Superintendent of Customs R.M. Razeen.
