Drug case suspect acquitted

Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara acquitted a suspect accused of possessing heroin, yesterday morning.

The verdict was given after the alleged 29 packets of heroin seized from the suspect was said to have been misplaced.

The accused, a female resident of Heraliyawala, was indicted by the Attorney-General for possessing heroin following a raid conducted at her house on October 26, 2010.

She had been arrested by Kurunegala Police upon receiving a tip-off from the public.

Defence Attorney Lakmal Ratnayaka told court that without the evidence, the prosecution party could not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt and requested the court to dismiss the case. State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri prosecuted.
