The Ebilipititya economic center situated on the border of the Hambantota district is facing a crisis. This economic center was set up in January 2003, to facilitate the farmer community and the wholesalers to dispose of agro based products and also to enhance wholesale trade.

There are 90 medium stalls for the farmer community to dispose of their products. The stalls at the open market premises, costs a monthly rent which is very high, while a non refundable deposit of Rs.50,000 has to be met. At the moment, several shop premises remain closed, while several traders are in default of their monthly rent. The farmer community said that the special economic center at Embilipitiya is situated far away from their agricultural lands and high rates have to be met for transportation of their products.

Meanwhile Minster of Agriculture, Rural Economic and Veterinary Resources P. Harrison, has said that the center is not functioning properly for the benefit of the target groups.
