No sufficient rains till mid-May - Met Dept

There will not be sufficient rainfall until mid-May, the Meteorology Department announced yesterday.

However, there will be intermittent showers occurring in the south-west and hill parts of the country, the department said. Severe heat conditions will also prevail until mid-April, the Meteorology Department stated.

At a press brief held at the Disaster Management Ministry yesterday, subject Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara said Rs. 6.6 mn had been allocated for 75,416 families who were affected by the drastic weather conditions prevailing in the country. He said 207 tractors and water bowsers and water containers have been distributed to provide water for 57,907 families in need of a safe drinking water supply.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board urged public to use water sparingly observing that water-usage in Colombo and sub-urban areas have increased greatly in comparison to the water availability.
