Paddy farmers in Hambantota lament

Farmers in Hambantota complain that their counterparts in Ampara, Kalmune and Akkaraipattu sell their paddy to Hambantota mill owners at a low price.

They said branches of the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) buy only 2,000 kilos of paddy from a farmer and private rice millers by any quantity of paddy at farmers’ doorsteps, but they have to transport paddy to PMB branches spending a lot. Farmers who cultivate the Tangalu Welyaya in Tangalle complain that their paddy fields get inundated even in a shower since illegal structures have been set up on either side of the Tangalle dam.
