Doctors get internships after SC lifts injunction

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne presented appointment letters to 278 medical interns yesterday, after the Supreme Court lifted an interim order against such appointments, in a case filed by some SAITM graduates.

Internships were given to 278 fully qualified medical graduates who passed out from state medical faculties with Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) registration. Legal appointments can be given only to doctors who have SLMC registration.

The internships were to be given in February, but some SAITM graduates had filed a fundamental rights petition in this regard.

In November 2018, no medical students passed out from state medical faculties, as they could not complete their education, since they were engaged in continuous protests over the SAITM issue.

After SAITM was closed down, its students were allowed to enroll in the Kotelawala Defence University and obtain a MBBS with SLMC recognition.
