The Western Province Police Intelligence Unit along with the Consumer Affairs Authority and the STF raided a large-scale illicit liquor brewery in the marshes of Muthurajawela at Kala Eliya in Ja-Ela on March 2.

Police officers took equipment which was used to manufacture illicit liquor, worth over Rs. 10 million into custody along with a suspect. He was identified as a well-known businessman in the area.

A stock of yeast worth nearly Rs. four million, 50 kg of sugar, 300 gas cylinders, a large stock of ammonia, eight bags of urea, a large number of polythene bags and around 100 tin barrels were also seized.
