Award winning writer reportedly remanded

An award winning writer S.Sathyakumara had been reportedly remanded by the Polgahawela Magistrate Courts after a complaint was lodged with the Police that a story published by him on social media may cause religious tension.

The Police had reportedly charged Sathyakumara under an international agreement, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)initiated by the UN.

Sathyakumara had been reportedly remanded until 9 April after Police produced him in courts following a complaint lodged by a Buddhist organisation accusing the writer of inciting religious hatred by publishing a short story on facebook.

The story is said to be about a Buddhist monk who renounced the saffron robe and his experiences while being a Buddhist Monk. Article 20 of the ICCPR states: any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law.
