Food Safety Week until April 7

April 1 to 7 marks Food Safety Week, a Health Ministry spokesman said. It is held under the guidance of Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne and is organised by the Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Ministry.

According to a ministry spokesman, the theme of the week is 'Let's Buy Food Only Offered Safely'. Legal action will be taken against institutions that provide food unfit for consumption and inspections will be conducted at canteens of state institutions, as well as places where long-distance private buses stop for meals.

The objective of this year's programme is to educate the public to reject unsafe food and make complaints to authorities. A certificate will be issued to those involved in handling food, after providing them a four-hour training session on the subject, the spokesman said.

MOHs in the country are to organise and implement food safety assurance programmes island-wide, this week, he added.
