Ashan, Sameera win Northern Speed Rally 2019

Ashan Silva and Irfan Fuad clinched the best driver and co-driver awards while Sameera Premaratne was awarded the Best Rider award at the Northern Speed Rally 2019 worked off at the Jaffna Public grounds recently. The Sri Lanka Motor Racing Association, Army Motor Sports Club and Jaffna Motor Sports Club conducted the event for the first time. Ashan and Fuad took 1h:05m.29s to complete the nine stages covering 130 Kms.

Shafraz Junaid and his co-driver Ameen took 1h:11m to win second place, while Nishantha Senadheera and his co-driver Roshitha Aluthwela won third place clocking 1h:14m.19s.

The motorbike event comprised six stages and Army riding race Sameera Premaratne took 55m:19s to win the crown. D. M. K. Kalhara won second place with a timing of 56m:20s. Police STF rider H. B. C. I. Samaranayaka (1h:03m.7s) secured the third place.

Javidh Wahab and co-driver Risvin Rashik emerged champions of the Jeep and Truck category who spent 1h:27m.20s to complete the nine stages. Buddhi Gunaseka and co-driver Kumudika Gunasekara won second place with a timing of 1h:28m.19s. Third place went on to Amjad Rizvi and co-driver Ashad Senudeen (1h:28m.41s).

Ashan and Irfan also won the SL/GT event, while Shafraz Junaid and co-driver Ameen won the second place. Yasith Gamage and his co-driver Dakshina Amarasinghe secured the third place.

Winners of the races participated in a school equipment donation ceremony organized by the Brigade Commander of the 55th Brigade, Brigadier Sampath Kotuwegoda, where nearly 150 schoolchildren were given books and school equipment in the Vetalkerny region. The donation was made at St. Anthony’s Church, Vetalkerny.

The first phase of the races was conducted around the Jaffna public ground as a night event commencing at 7.30pm on March 22. The 130km race was started on March 23 near the Chunnikulam A9 Cafeteria after the inspection of vehicles. The second phase commenced at Aiyakachchi.

On the final day (March 24), races concluded at 3.00pm and the prize-giving was held with Jaffna Security Forces Commander and Army Motor Sports Committee chairman Maj. Gen. Dharshana Hettiarachchi participating as the chief guest.
