SLFP undecided on forming National Govt.- Thilanga

Colombo district MP Thilanga Sumathipala said yesterday that the SLFP has not taken any decision to form a National Government together with the United National Party.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, he said the SLFP left the National Government on October 26 last year with the pledge that it would never rejoin a National Government with the UNP at any occasion. We will not change this decision under any circumstances,” he added.

The SLFP formed a National Government with the UNP only with the intention of abolishing the Executive Presidency, decentralising powers and changing the electoral system.

“The people of this country wanted us to quit the National Government and that is why we received a biggest mandate from them during the previous Local Government polls. We are further working to fulfill their hopes,” he added.

“Our party will take a final decision with regard to voting on the Third Reading of Budget 2019 on April 3. Our main aim is to defeat the budget and not to topple the government,” he added.

Commenting on the ongoing discussions between the SLFP and the SLPP, he said 20 main issues have already been taken into consideration by both parties.

“We are confident that only one candidate will be put forward by both parties at the upcoming Presidential election,” he added.
