The inaugural netball match between Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo and Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda, the ‘Battle of the Golds’ will be played for the Motwani Challenge Shield on March 29 at the Racecourse grounds commencing 9.00 am.

The challenge shield is named after Ms. Clara Motwani who was the principal of both Visakha Vidyalaya and Sujatha Vidyalaya. Ms. Motwani served for 12 years as the principal of Visakha Vidyalaya from 1933 to 1945 and was the founder principal of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda and served 23 years from 1965 to 1988.

The inaugural ‘Battle of the Golds’ encounter is hosted by Sujatha Vidyalaya this year while next year it will be hosted by Visakha Vidyalaya. This is the curtain raiser of the annual encounter which is planned to be held annually in the years to come between the two leading girl’s schools. Both schools have taken this initiative to set an example among girl’s schools to develop sports and inter-school sports encounters.

Upani Roopasinghe will lead Visakha Vidyalaya and Lilasha Kaushalya Managoda Sujatha Vidyalaya. Both teams are packed with good players posing threat to each other to win the Motwani Challenge Shield.

The winning team will receive the Motwani Challenge Shield and medals and certificates will be presented to players who showcase their talent.

In addition to the main event both schools will also play a netball match for the Under 17 Challenge Trophy to encourage younger generation to participate more in the field of sports.
