Pregnant mothers having fever must hospitalise without delay - Ministry

Pregnant mothers suffering from fever should be admitted to a hospital on the first day of fever, the Health Ministry advises the public.

Health Ministry sources said complications develop in pregnant mothers who suffer from fever or influenza and their lives and the lives of their unborn can be in danger. Therefore all mothers who suffer from any type of fever should be hospitalised on the very first day.

This year two maternal deaths had been reported due to influenza and pneumonia. Last year (2018) 11 pregnant mothers died due to pneumonia. Dengue and Influenza killed 41 pregnant mothers in 2017.

Special medical treatment can be given to pregnant mothers to ensure the safety of their lives when they arrive at a hospital on the first day of fever. All pregnant mothers should avoid close contact with affected persons and should keep themselves away from crowded places, the said.

All pregnant mothers should strictly follow respiratory hygiene, the Ministry added.
