Unruly protesters dispersed in Puttalam

Police yesterday dispersed a protest staged by an unruly group in Puttalam against the Aruwakkalu landfill project.

The protesters demanded a meeting with the President who was scheduled to participate in several events including the closing ceremony of the Puttalam district Ekata Sitimu programme (Stand together for the country).

The Police had also obtained a court order suspending the protest campaign. But the protestors staged a protest blocking roads despite the court ruling.

Protesters insisted that they wanted to meet the President to discuss the issue.

Police refused their demand to get close to the venue where a ceremony was to take place under the patronage of the President. Special Task Force, riot squads were deployed to maintain order in the area.
