No planned power cuts; use electricity sparingly - Minister

Power, Renewable Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake, while assuring an uninterrupted power supply throughout the country, urged the public to consume electricity sparingly.

The Minister made this assurance during an observation visit to the Norochcholai Lakvijaya power plant, where a technical failure occurred on Monday (18). It was rectified by CEB engineers in 36 hours.

The Minister said it is not an easy time for the power sector as there is a high demand for electricity due to the prevailing dry weather. “There could be sudden power outages due to failures in the system. But, we will not curtail the power supply. Therefore, the people do not need to have an unnecessary fear,” he said.

Minister Karunanayake said there had been no power plant set up during the past five years and they will plan to prevent such inconveniences to the public in the future.

He requested those spreading misinformation regarding an electricity mafia not to mislead the public.
