Discussion to decide on future of excavation activities

Judicial Medical Officer in charge of excavation activities carried out at the Mannar mass grave site Dr. Shamindra Rajapaksa yesterday said a special discussion is scheduled to take place today to decide whether to continue or abandon the excavation activities at the grave site.

He said that this discussion presided over by Mannar Magistrate T. Saravanarajah will be held at the Mannar Court Complex.

“Judicial Medical Offiers, officials of the Office of Missing Persons and relatives of disappeared persons in Mannar are expected to participate in this meeting.

“Police is providing round the clock security to the site until a final decision is made by the authorities concerned,” he said. The excavation of the grave site started on May 28, 2018 and investigators found 248 skeletal remains. Around 330 such remains have been kept in a special room at the Mannar Courts Complex.
