New Police Tourist Unit opens in Mirissa today

The Mirissa Police Tourist Unit will be opened today under a pilot project targeting the country.

Chief Inspector Prabath Vidanagama of the Tourist Police said establishing a safe environment for foreign tourists travelling in Sri Lanka was of paramount importance.

Tourism is one of the main deciding factors of Sri Lanka economy and therefore, maintaining a reputation on tourists' safety is must for the sustainability of the tourism industry, he said.

With the increasing of tourists arrivals, it has been noticed harassment reported related to the tourists too, increasing and Sri Lanka Police decided to enhance the Police Tourist activities with plans to open another 20 Police Tourist Units in identified popular tourist destinations in addition to the existing 11 units.

The new unit was constructed using convertainers and has been provided with all facilities sponsored by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
