At an event held by the Sinhala Dictionary Office of the Cultural Affairs Department, a new edition of the Sinhala dictionary was launched yesterday under the auspices of Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa.

Cultural Affairs Department Director Anusha Gokula Fernando told the gathering that the use of the Sinhala language was waning and that the language was hardly used by millennials today.

She said there was a time when many attempts were made to advance and promote the language.

“However, today, be it in Parliament or the rural village, the language is used less often and more needs to be done now than ever before to preserve its beauty,” she said. The new edition of the dictionary was launched in the presence of many eminent academics, religious leaders, and officials from the Cultural Affairs Ministry.
