Eight re-remanded till April 4

The eight suspects who were arrested in connection with the massive heroin haul in Beruwala were further remanded until April 4 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

The Police Narcotics Bureau had detected 231 kilograms and 54 grams of heroin in 214 packs, concealed in large bags of sugar.

According to the B-report, the suspects had connections with the drug trade in the Seychelles and Pakistan, for a long period of time.

Attorney-at-law Manju Sri Wijesinghe, appearing on behalf of the second suspect, requested that his client be released from this case, as his client was the owner of the trawler involved in the case, and did not know anything about the content of the parcels.

The Magistrate also ordered the PNB to produce a report on the progress of the investigation, on the next hearing day. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for April 4.
