Caring for cancer patients

Sri Lanka Cancer Society (SLCS) has announced that the record collection of proceeds obtained during the last six months from its newly opened `Op Shop‘ will be utilized to conduct free clinics for cancer patients and to screen females for breast, oral, cervical and skin cancers.

In addition, the proceeds are also utilized to run the `Cancer Hospice’ at Maharagama (adjoining the Apeksha Hospital) for terminally ill cancer patients and cancer homes run by the Sri Lanka Cancer Society all over the country.

The `Op Shop’ charity centre was opened at Sri Lanka Cancer Society Head Quarters, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7 with the sole objective of collecting funds for the welfare of cancer patients.

The internationally renowned ‘Op Shops’ are charity collection centres that sells numerous items including readymade garments, clothing materials, home appliances, toys, educational equipment, footwear, school bags and many more. The `Op Shop’ is open at SLCS Head Quarters on Fridays from 9.30am to 2pm.

SLCS, Public Education Committee, Chairperson Indrani Nanayakkara said the SLCS is a community based voluntary organization opened several decades ago to provide welfare facilities for cancer patients.

She said anybody who visit the `Op Shop’ could buy very useful items such as fashion clothing, gents wear including suits, ties and shirts, children’s clothing , baby items, saris, skirts, blouses, electrical goods , books costume jewellery, crockery, cutlery and various other miscellaneous items at affordable prices.

“The `Op Shop’ needs kind hearted people with sympathy and empathy in their hearts to buy these items, “she said. She further said the SLCS is also usings the `Op Shop’ as a forum to educate the buyers who visit the shop on early detection, medication, diet and the change in life styles in the prevention and cure of this dreaded disease. “The SLCS also conducts educational awareness programmes on cancer at schools and public offices every month,” she added.
