Farmers to receive air rifles soon

A sum of Rs.6.5 million has been allocated to the Kurunegala District Secretariat by the Presidential Secretariat for supplying air rifles to farmers to protect their cultivation from wild animals.

Under the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena, a special programme is being implemented throughout the island to supply air rifles to farmers whose cultivations are being destroyed by wild animals such as monkeys, rock squirrels, and porcupines.

According to Kurunegala Agriculture District Director N.H.Wimalarathne, this programme will be implemented as a pilot project in all the 30 Divisional Secretariats in the Kurunegala district, and under its first stage, air rifles will be provided to 300 farmers, he added.
