Couple killed, four injured in Karandupona crash

A couple from Gampaha was killed and six others were injured in a major collision involving a bus, car and a van at Karandupona junction in Kegalle on the Colombo - Kandy road yesterday morning.

Police said that the car had crashed into the passenger bus plying from Colombo to Kandy seriously injuring the couple. They were pronounced dead on admission to the Kegalle General Hospital. A van which came behind the car also collided injuring six persons in the van.

Police said the victims in the car had been returning home after visiting the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

The deceased have been identified as Preetisiri Samankumara (61) and Palami Chandralatha (54) of Bemmulla, Gampaha. She is the wife of the driver. The driver of the passenger bus was arrested and produced before the Kegalle Magistrate.

The bodies have been kept at the Kegalle hospital morgue.
