First ever Women Surfing Club in SL setup

The first ever registered Women Surfing Club in Sri Lanka was inaugurated at Arugamaby in the Eastern Part of Sri Lanka recently.

Deputy Head of Mission of the Australian High Commission Victoria Coakley graced this occasion as the chief guest.

Skills for Inclusive Growth (S4IG), an initiative of the Australian Government’s aid program, implemented in partnership with the Sri Lanka Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training hosted this launching ceremony for the Arugambay Girls Surf Club which will receive professional development and certification by the International Surfing Association San Diego, California.

Addressing the women surf club members, surf coach and instructors at this inauguration ceremony” Deputy High Commissioner for Australian Government, Victoria Coakley said that she was happy to inaugurate this program which is challenging for women. They have proved their capabilities and talents by overcoming all the obstacles. This was a good sign and encouraging not only young girls, even the elders should come forward to engage themselves in this surfing, she said.

The club’s president, Shamalie Sanjaya, a young mother who has watched her brothers Surfing from a young age said that it is possible to have a family, meet cultural obligations and still pursue one’s passion. “My husband looks after my child while I surf. My husband encourages me to go surfing and I am honored that I can train other young girls,” she said.

Team Leader David C.Albert, Divisional Secretary A.C.A.Naseel also spoke. Inclusion Officer for S4IG Ms. Lavanya Christy delivered vote of thanks. Following the introduction of women surfers to the chief guest and other guests their demonstration were held in baby point in Ulle where surfing activities go on.
