Two global higher education confabs in Colombo

A biennial conference of the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) will be held on March 25–28, at BMICH, Colombo.

In line with the INQAAHE conference, another international conference – Asia Pacific Quality Network (APQN) – which also focuses on the quality of higher education, will also be held in Colombo.

The 15th INQAAHE biennial conference will see the participation of quality assurance and accreditation bodies and higher education institutions from 50 countries.

Meanwhile, the APQN 2019 conference will be held on March 29–30 at BMICH. The University Grant Commission (UGC) will host both conferences.

Parallel to the two international conferences, measures will be taken to implement the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Act, which would lead to the establishment of a Quality Assurance Directorate, UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan de Silva said.

He said the two international conferences will pave the way for creating an accreditation and quality assurance mechanism for the Sri Lankan higher education sector.

Senior Prof. Deepthi Bandara said INQAAHE is a worldwide association of over 200 organisations that are active in the theory and practice of quality assuarance in higher education.

As an outcome of the conference, stakeholders can adhere to and share the best practices and experiences of its members and other persons who are tasked with ensuring the quality of degree programmes and higher educational institutions.

Quality higher education is necessary for the national manpower development of any country, Prof. Bandara said.

In the Sri Lankan context, an accreditation and quality assurance mechanism is vital in the higher education sector to streamline undergraduate programmes offered by state and private higher education institutions, Prof. Silva said.

President Maithripala Sirisena will be the chief guest at the INQAAHE conference, while Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be the chief guest and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, the guest of honour at the APQN conference.
